Description
According to a note in my copy of The Psalmody of the Freewill Baptist General Conference (Dover, NH; 1853), this text was sung to an unknown tune at the funeral of "Deacon Stanton" on October 22, 1854. (This note was inscribed by the book's original owner, Vilana A. Jackson of Orange, Vermont.) The current setting was written in August and September of 2007. It has been sung at the 2007 Berkshire Foothills Composium, the 2008 WMSHC Composium, and the November, 2011 singing from The Trumpet in Lowell, MA. It was also sung by the Art Mob in their Spring, 2008 concerts. Stanton appears in The Trumpet, Vol. 1, No. 3 (2011).
Text
Brother, rest from sin and sorrow!
Death is o’er, and life is won;
On thy slumber dawns no morrow:
Rest! thine earthly race is run.
Hark! The golden harps are ringing,
Sounds angelic fill the air:
Millions now in heaven singing
Greet our joyful entrance there.
Brother, wake! the night is waning;
Endless day is round thee poured:
Enter thou the rest remaining
For the people of the Lord.
Hark! The golden harps are ringing,
Sounds angelic fill the air:
Millions now in heaven singing
Greet our joyful entrance there.
Fare thee well! tho’ woe is blending
With the tones of earthly love,
Triumph high and joy unending
Wait thee in the realms above!
Hark! The golden harps are ringing,
Sounds angelic fill the air:
Millions now in heaven singing
Greet our joyful entrance there.
