Singing at Allison and Jan-Erik's (Jan. 2010)
Sung by Jesse Pearlman Karlsberg, Lauren Bock, Allison Schofield, Jan-Erik Steele, Julian Damashek, Deidra Montgomery, Liora Goldensher, and Kendahl Goldwater-Feldman at the first JPK singing. Recorded at Allison and Jan-Erik’s home in Old Chatham, NY, January 20, 2010.
Second recording of the song sung at a brisk tempo.
Description
I wrote "Newton" in Troy, NY on November 30, 2009 the week after spending Thanksgiving with my family in Newton, MA, the suburb of Boston where I grew up, a visit during which Lauren and I announced our engagement to my family.
"Newton" is among three of my songs included in the fifth edition of The Northern Harmony (2012).
Text
In vain I trace creation o'er
In search of solid rest
The whole creation is too poor
Too mean to make me blest
Chorus:
Let earth and all her charms depart
Unworthy of the mind
In God alone this restless heart
Enduring bliss can find.
In vain would this low world employ
Each flattering specious wile;
There's nought can yield a real joy,
But our Creator's smile.
Chorus.
