I wrote this song on August 2, 2013, shortly after hearing about the death of Jeff Sheppard. I chose to write a setting of the words to "Portland," a favorite song of Jeff's in The Sacred Harp. This song is dedicated to the Sheppard family.

A small group of singers tried out the song on August 3, 2013 in Wilson's Chapel after the conclusion of the Saturday session of the Chattahoochee Musical Convention.

Sweet is the day of sacred rest,
No mortal cares shall seize my breast;
O may my heart in tune be found,
Like David's harp of solemn sound.

Then shall I see and hear and know
All I desired and wished below,
And every pow'r find sweet employ
In that eternal world of joy.
