Description

Named for the Round Lake Camp Meeting in Round Lake, NY, this tune was written in 2010 from a text found in Joseph Hillman and Lewis Hartsough's The Revivalist (Troy, NY; 1868). Hillman was the founder of The Round Lake Camp Meeting, and this text was almost certainly sung there in the 19th century. (Please see Hillman and Oneida for other songs with connections to Hillman, Hartsough, and The Revivalist.) Sung by the Art Mob in their Winter, 2010 concerts, Round Lake appears on p. 218 of the fifth edition of Northern Harmony (2012).

Text

The Christian race is now begun,
We’re striving for a heav’nly crown,

For the prize, it lies at the end of the race
O, Glory, Hallelujah!
O, Glory, Hallelujah!
For the prize, it lies at the end of the race
O, Glory, Hallelujah!

We’ll run the race and gain the prize,
The heav’nly mansion in the skies,

For the prize, it lies at the end of the race...

In earnest cry we'll wrestle long,
Then on a kingly throne sit down,

For the prize, it lies at the end of the race...

Then when the race we’ve nobly run,
He’ll count us worthy of a crown,

For the prize, it lies at the end of the race...
